Drills to Teach a Clear Hip Handstand
1 of the 4 basic families to women’s uneven bars along with the kip/cast family, giants (all grips), dismount (front & back)
Technique:
Cast, tight hollow (head neutral), as the athlete descends they should hold a hollow while scooping the toes under at the same time pushing the shoulders back to drop under and around the bar to open/extend the shoulders to handstand.
Prerequisites:
- Straight arm hollow body back hip circle
Basic Back “Thigh” Circle
This drill helps shape the gymnast and teaches wrist change with pressure down on the bar for the clear hip handstand. If they do not wrist change they will fall down to their hips instead of keeping the pushed up shape in their upper back.
Clear Hip Handstand Open Drill
This drill introduces the open action of the clear hip handstand and we take it one step further with adding a small cast to start working on the pushing back feeling in the “drop” or beginning of the clear hip.
